2024 Pokémon GO World Championships Competitor Information

Competitors at the World Championships will be vying for the title of Pokémon GO World Champion, as well as great prizes. Play will begin on August 16 and conclude on August 18.

Pokémon GO competitors qualify for this event by participating in competitions during the 2024 Championship Series season. Competitors can earn invitations to the prestigious 2024 Pokémon GO World Championships by performing at an exceptional level at these events.

Competitors must be in good standing with the Play! Pokémon program to participate, and they must have an active Play! Pokémon account with current and accurate information.

Competitors must comply with the Tournament Rules.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Competitors qualify for Worlds by earning Championship Points at events throughout the Championship Series season. Pokémon TCG, Pokémon video game, and Pokémon GO players must hit a threshold of Championship Points to earn their Worlds invitation. The number of Championship Points required to receive an invitation is based on both geographical rating zone and age division.

The very best competitors will receive an award for travel to attend the event.

Competitors in Japan, South Korea, and the Asia-Pacific region will be awarded World Championships invitations as per their regions’ organized play and esports programs. Players from these rating zones are not eligible to earn World Championships invitations through Championship Points or through automatic invites earned by winning Regional or International Championships.

Additionally, there are different levels of invites that competitors may earn, with varying levels of travel support provided:

  • Tier 1 Invite: Worlds Invitation + Travel Award
  • Tier 2 Invite: Worlds Invitation + Travel Stipend
  • Tier 3 Invite: Worlds Invitation only

Note: Competitors in South Africa are not eligible for Travel Awards and Travel Stipends.

The table below lays out what type of invite a Pokémon GO competitor earns based on their final ranking in the Championship Points standings in their rating zone at the end of the season.

Rating Zone Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
US and Canada 1–8 9-12

Tier 3*

Europe 1–8 9-12

Competitors must still earn the prerequisite number of Championship Points for a Tier 3 invite in order to be eligible for Tier 1 and Tier 2 invites. Guaranteed invites from event placements do not pass down if the recipient qualifies for Worlds through other means.

Tournament Format and Structure

Tournament Format and Structure

Competitors will compete in groups in double-elimination brackets using the Great League format in Pokémon GO. The top competitors from each group will advance to the Finals bracket. Tournament pairings will be posted to Challonge. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with Challonge prior to the event.

Matches are best of three, except for the Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals, which are best of five.

What to Bring

What to Bring

When you show up for the Pokémon GO tournament, you will need to have a team of tournament-legal Pokémon for the Great League format in your Pokémon GO account. Pokémon on the Pokémon GO Championships Banned Pokémon list are not permitted for play.

Competitors will compete on smartphones provided by the organizer. Competitors will be expected to log in and log out during the tournament. It is the competitor’s responsibility to log out of the device after each match concludes. If a competitor’s Pokémon GO account requires two-factor authentication to log in, that player should ensure that their personal device is present and capable of receiving notifications.

You will be provided with a copy of your Team Preview List at the beginning of the tournament. You are responsible for looking after this list, as you will need to present it to each of your opponents per the Match Structure guidelines in section 5.1 of the Pokémon GO Tournament Rules.
